What is matcha?

Matcha (抹茶) is a type of powdered green tea made from specially grown and processed Camellia sinensis leaves. Unlike regular green tea, where you steep the leaves and discard them, matcha involves consuming the whole leaf in powdered form, which provides more nutrients and a stronger flavor.

How is matcha grown and processed?

Matcha is made from young tea leaves that are shade-grown for 3–4 weeks before harvest to boost chlorophyll and amino acids. The leaves are hand-picked, steamed to stop oxidation, dried, and deveined, then stone-ground into a fine, bright green powder. Read more

Where does your matcha come from?

Our matcha is sourced directly from Japan, where it is carefully cultivated and stone-ground to ensure premium quality, and contains no pesticides.

How do I prepare matcha?

Simply whisk 1–2 teaspoons of matcha powder with hot water (75–80°C / 170–175°F) or room temperature until frothy. You can enjoy it traditional style or add it to lattes, smoothies, or desserts. Please checkout our blogs or instagram page to find more recipes. (@kizenya-matcha)

Is matcha caffeinated?

Yes, matcha contains caffeine. Typically about half the amount in a cup of coffee, providing a smooth, sustained energy boost without the jitters.

What is a Chasen?

A traditional bamboo whisk used to prepare matcha by mixing the powder with water.

How do you care for a Chasen?

Rinse with warm water before and after use, avoid soap, and let it air dry.

If I don’t have a Chasen, what else can I use to whisk matcha?

You can use our mini matcha shaker! Just simply add water, matcha powder and shake. A milk frother is also an easy alternative for a smooth, frothy matcha.

How should I store matcha?

Keep your matcha in an airtight container or in a zip bag, away from light, heat, and moisture. Refrigeration after opening is recommended to maintain freshness.

How long does matcha stay fresh after opening?

Ideally, consume it within 1–2 months of opening. After that, the flavor and color begin to fade, especially if not stored properly.

Is matcha vegan and gluten-free?

Pure matcha is 100% vegan and gluten-free.

How much matcha can you safely drink per day?

2–4g total per day is ideal for most people. Up to 5-6g per day, but it’s best to stay below 6g to avoid too much caffeine.

Can everyone drink matcha?

Most people can, but if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have health issues, talk to a doctor first.

Can kids drink matcha?

Small amounts of matcha are okay for children, but avoid giving it too often because of caffeine. It’s best if it’s mixed with milk to reduce caffeine effects.
