What is Cold Whisked Matcha?
Cold whisked matcha is a modern take on the traditional Japanese tea ceremony technique, where finely ground matcha powder is normally whisked with hot water. Instead, this method uses cold or room-temperature water, bringing out a completely different experience of the tea.
By using cold water, the matcha develops a smooth, naturally sweet flavor with less bitterness than when prepared with heat. The vibrant green color remains bright and fresh, making it visually appealing and perfect for iced drinks. Whisking with a bamboo whisk in circular motions helps create a light, frothy texture, even without hot water.
How to Make Cold Whisked Latte
- Sift 3 grams of matcha (or your preferred amount).
- Prepare 150ml of cold milk.
- Add 30 ml of the cold milk and use a bamboo whisk to mix the matcha with water in a circular motion for a few seconds before whisking.
- Whisk using a rapid zigzag motion (M or W shape) for 50-60 seconds.
- Add syrup and whisk for 5 seconds.
- Pour the rest of the cold milk and continue whisking 20 seconds.
- Pour matcha latte over ice and enjoy! (Use rock ice for best flavor).
Notes
- The colder the milk you use, the richer and creamier your matcha will be.
- If you prefer a bolder taste, use more matcha (around 5–6 g).
